Villas of Chernivtsi city

If you are interested in Chernivtsi of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, then you should walk through the quarter of villas, shrouded in legends and historical events of past centuries.

Schiller's Villa. The villa at 32 Fedkovycha Street immediately catches the eye of passers-by, as its facade is decorated with unusual elements of ornamental stucco. The villa was for many years the refuge of financial advisor  Heinrich Schiller.

Not far from it is the villa of the Wolf family. The villa at Fedkovycha, 38 was home to the Wolf family with a rich educational history. Stefan Wolf came to Chernivtsi from Vienna at the invitation of Emperor Franz Joseph. He wrote textbooks, edited curricula, and was an active member of the state education council.

No less famous in the city was the Villa of the Yasynskys (the first head of the Ukrainian People's House in Chernivtsi - Volodymyr Yasynsky and his family) - an amazingly beautiful house resembling a castle on Yu. Fedkovycha Street, 27 (formerly Sadovaya Street). For half a century, the cultural and public life of Chernivtsi and Bukovina was in full swing in this villa. After all, the family of a prominent public figure of the Ukrainian national revival in Bukovina lived here. His son Roman lived here with his wife Maria, the niece of Vasyl Simovich, an outstanding scientist - linguist, teacher and publicist, editor and organizer of the cultural, public and educational movement.

The Mandychevsky Villa on the streets of Erzgertsoga Karla (Austrian era), Aviatora Gadzhea (Romanian era), Mykhailo Frunze (Soviet era), and now Vasyl Aksenin at number 3 in Chernivtsi in the last century was called the European music salon. Music professor Kateryna Mandychevsky,who came from the famous large musical family of the Mandychevskys, lived here. This was the meeting place of Vasyl Mandychevsky with his sons, musicians: Konstantin, Georgy and Eusebius,who lived an active cultural and artistic life of the region, created the string quartet "Mandychevsky Brothers" and knew P. Tchaikovsky and F. Liszt. From the windows of this house, the sounds of magical melodies always reached passers-by.

On the former street of Mykhailo Frunze, and now the street of Maidan hero Vasyl Aksenin, there is house number 31 - the villa of Ostap von Lutsky - a young "young musician", editor of the magazine "Bukovyna", head of the "Peasant's Cash Office", whose husband had a romantic relationship with Olga Kobylyanska.

The Rezzori family villa at Aksenin Street, 38 also adds glory to the people of Chernivtsi, as the architect  Hugo von Rezzori lived here, and his son Gregor von Rezzori spent his youth here - a journalist, screenwriter, writer, author of 25 German-language books, an artist whose works are stored in the storage rooms of Chernivtsi museums, and an actor who starred in 22 films, including in partnership with Brigitte Bardot.
